Snoqualmie Falls, Washington

Like other famous waterfalls (including Niagara), the 270 foot tall falls at Snoqualmie can be controlled like a tap by hydroelectric facilities. Puget Power excavated a 1,250 foot tunnel through the rock to divert the water to electricity generating turbines, in what was possibly the world's first totally underground generating facility (the above ground plant was added later). Water pours out of the plant through a hole to the right of the base of the falls, unnoticed by most visitors. More than 90% of the water can be diverted. A popular tourist site, the falls attract 1.5 million visitors annually. Famous as the falls in the television program Twin Peaks.
