Solvay Trona Mine, Wyoming
Located south of Interstate 80, at the end of Tenneco Road, the Solvay mine is the southernmost of the four massive mines working the world’s largest deposit of trona, in southwestern Wyoming. Up to 90% of the trona produced in the USA comes from these four mines, somewhere between 15 and 20 million tons per year. Trona is a form of soda ash which is used in glass making, detergents, and many other industries. The mine’s owner, Solvay, is a French and Belgian chemical conglomerate.
