Spring Creek Coal Mine, Montana

This is one of the four large coal strip mine located in the Powder River Basin of Montana, producing around 12 million tons of coal annually. Opened in 1980, and operated by Kennecott for many years, it provides coal to power plants across the country. The Powder River Basin has eight of the ten largest coal mines in the country, though most of them are across the state line in Wyoming.
