St. Croix Oil Refinery and Tank Farm, US Virgin Islands, US Territories
The industrial port on the southern side of St. Croix Island is dominated by a large oil refinery, built by Hess in 1966, which had a capacity of almost 500,000 barrels per day, making it among the largest in the world, and which once provided 20% of the revenue of the US Virgin Islands, before it closed in 2012. St Croix is 35 miles south of the more touristed St. Thomas and St. John Islands.
