Stanford Research Institute, California

The Stanford Research Institute (also known as SRI International) was initially established in 1946 as a nonprofit lab associated with Stanford University, but became independent of the university in 1970. It was an early node of the ARPANET, and a major developer of early computer and internet technology among other advances, helping to form what would become Silicon Valley.
