Suisun Bay Mothballed Fleet, California

This was the largest remaining "mothball fleet" of ships left in the USA, vessels mostly from WWII, considered surplus, but kept just in case, as part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet, as overseen by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration. In 2010, due to a lawsuit brought by various environmental groups in conjunction with California regulators, the Maritime Administration agreed to clean up and remove all remaining ships, in the hope of reducing the amount of toxic substances released by the rusting fleet. While most of the ships destined to be scrapped are towed through the Panama Canal to Brownsville, Texas (the center of U.S. shipbreaking), some may be scrapped locally at Mare Island.
