This is the latest bridge to replace the original span, which was known as Galloping Gertie, for its dramatic oscillations, and whose collapse in 1940 was captured on film. Ten years passed before the completion of its replacement in 1950. In 1998, a decision was made to construct a second bridge parallel to the original, in order to reduce traffic congestion. The second bridge was completed in 2007. The two bridges are currently the fifth-longest suspension bridge spans in the United States, with a total length of over 5,400 feet. The remains of the original 1940 bridge still lie submerged in the water below the current mile long span, and now act as a large artificial reef.
