Townsend Bombing Range, Georgia
This 5,182 acre range near the coastal estuary of the Altamaha River consists of a conventional bullseye target 1,000 feet in diameter; strafing targets; a surface-to-air missile target, a simulated command post, as well as other vehicle and structural targets made out of shipping containers. Once operated by Glynco Naval Air Station, it was closed in 1972. It reopened in 1981, and is now owned by the Marines, and operated by Georgia’s National Guard. Used by bases in the region including Beaufort and Parris Island Marine Corps bases, and Moody and Robins Air Force bases.
