Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant, Florida
Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant sits on a 3,300-acre site, adjacent to Biscayne Natural Park, two miles from Homestead, and 25 miles south of Miami. It has two reactors, generating 800 megawatts each, and a large gas fired plant too, boosting the total output of the plant to around 2,700 megawatts, making it the sixth largest power plant in the USA. The nuclear units were built in the early 1970s. The plant is unusual as instead of cooling towers it has a ten-square mile network of cooling canals, extending for miles south of the plant, which sometimes overheat. The plant is owned and operated by Florida Power & Light, which has proposed adding two more reactors to the site.
