Victorville Federal Prison, California

A federal prison, part of the larger Victorville Federal Prison Complex, opened in 2004 across from George Air Force Base, which closed a few years ago (and is now Southern California Logistics Airport). Victorville is a medium security prison with over 1,300 inmates. It is common to find federal prisons next to military bases (as at Vandeberg and Nellis Air Force Bases), built on existing federal property. In the case of the new Victorville Prison, the closure of George in the early 1990's created an economic vacuum that brought the prison.
