Vieques Island Bombing Range, Puerto Rico, US Territories
Vieques is an island off the eastern shore of the main island of Puerto Rico, and was used as bombing range and military maneuver area by the US military, until 2003, when it was closed. Known for years as the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Area-Vieques, it was a Navy facility, and covered about half the island. Some of the range has been opened to the public, and most of it has been designated as a wildlife refuge, though thousands of acres remain uncleared of unexploded ordnance, and chemicals like perchlorate, mercury, and depleted uranium.
