Vital Records Flagtown Vault, New Jersey
The company Vital Records Incorporated, bought this underground facility from AT&T in 1980, which up to that time used it as part of its federal communications infrastructure. VRI used it as a “tape vault”, a secure data storage site for information kept on reels of computer tape. In 1986, VRI built a surface structure above the entrance to the underground facility, in the form of a barn, to blend in with the local architecture. In 1995, the company expanded by purchasing the mountaintop Netcong Facility from AT&T, with 125,000 square feet of space, which it calls its Roxbury Vault.
