Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant, Georgia

The Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant (also known as Vogtle Electric Generating Plant), lies adjacent to the Savannah River in eastern Georgia, near the South Carolina border. It is operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) on behalf of parent company Southern Company, and is home to two pressurized water reactors. Unit 1 and Unit 2 have an output capacity of 1,215MW apiece. Unit 1's operating license was issued in 1987, while Unit 2's operating license was issued in 1989. In 2012, the NRC granted SNC both construction and operating licenses for two new reactor units to be built at the site, the first such approval in over thirty years. Construction of both units began in 2013, with an estimated cost of $14 billion. Since then, however, the project was plagued by serious delays, and by 2015, estimated costs had risen to $21 billion. In 2017, Southern Company issued a new cost estimate of $25 billion. Further complicating matters was Westinghouse's filing for bankruptcy in 2017.
