Volk Field Air National Guard Base, Wisconsin
This National Guard base is one of the largest military sites in Wisconsin, a state with a low military presence, with just one armed service (Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine) base, the Army’s Fort McCoy. Called Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center, the site has a large runway with some hangars, as well as Camp Williams, an area with housing for several hundred. Also on site are a hundred or so armored vehicles, and a few training areas, including a mock village, shooting range, and other tactical training facilities. The Wisconsin National Guard Museum is located on site, with more than a dozen aircraft on display. The national guard also operates the Hardwood Range, an air/ground training site, located 20 miles north.
