Wayne Disposal Facility, Michigan

The Wayne Disposal Facility is the only commercial hazardous waste landfill in Michigan. It is located on the southern edge of the Willow Run airport, and is operated by US Ecology, one of the largest long-term hazardous waste disposal companies in the country, and one of the few that also operates commercial radioactive waste landfills (though this is not one of them). The site has some unusual capabilities to stabilize waste before it is buried in the adjacent landfill, such as regenerative thermal oxidation, chemical oxidation, and microencapsulation. The facility gets solid chemical waste, and material contaminated with hazardous materials, such as PCBs, from sources throughout the Midwest.
