Welsh Power Plant, Texas
Welsh Power Plant is located near Cason, Texas, adjacent to the Welsh Reservoir, from which it draws its cooling water. As originally designed, the plant was home to three 528-MW units, whose combined output capacity was 1,584MW. In 2016, however, Unit 2 was retired, in order to met the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Mercury and Air Toxics Standards rule, without incurring additional retrofitting expenses. Units 1, 2, and 3 became operational in 1972, 1980, and 1982 respectively. The plant is operated by Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO), a subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP). Wyoming's Powder River Basin is the source of the plant's coal.
