The Smithsonian Institution in conjunction with the University of Arizona operates this observatory, which hosts a number of telescopes including one of the world's largest: the Multiple Mirror Telescope, which in its original incarnation was comprised of six 72" mirrors - until 2000, when the multiple mirrors were replaced with a single 256-inch primary mirror, more than doubling the light-gathering power of the telescope.
