White Oak Federal Research Center Site, Maryland

Once part of a complex of military R&D sites under control of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, White Oak Lab officially closed in the late 1990's, with some of its activities relocated to other Naval Surface Warfare Center sites, such as Dahlgren, VA, and Carderock, MD. Decades of use resulted in extensive contamination of portions of the site with hazardous wastes. Subsequent remediation efforts have been sufficiently successful, that the FDA's new headquarters now occupy 130-acres of the former naval facility. Clean-up efforts are ongoing, and there are plans to develop other portions of the site. Research labs continue to use facilities at the site as well.
