Once one of the largest federal tree nurseries in the country, this 200-acre operation, with three main nursery fields, produced as much as 36 million seedlings a year to reforest clearcut and burned areas. Located in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest near Carson, it was also an active forestry research site, developing cutting practices, reforestation methods, and conducting genetic studies. It closed in 1997, and some of the property has been transferred to the County.
