On the dunes near Kitty Hawk, is the site where America claims to have invented powered flight, through the famous and brief flights by the Wright Brothers, in 1903. The location is an official National Memorial, operated by the National Park Service, and includes several notable interpretive structures. Kill Devil Hill is a 90 foot tall dune used for glider flights, which has been stabilized with grass to house an impressive 60 foot tall stone monument to the Wright Brothers. At the base of the hill is a visitor center, and a reconstruction of the sheds from the Wright Brothers test camp. Nearby is a linear monument along the path of their first light, which lasted for 120 feet, and 12 seconds.
