Yankee Rowe Nuclear Power Plant, Massachusetts
Yankee Rowe Nuclear Power Plant was the first nuclear plant constructed in New England, and the third to be built in the U.S. The 185MW plant went online in 1960, in a remote northwestern part of the state, and was owned and operated by the Yankee Atomic Electric Company. In 1992, a decision was made to permanently close the plant, due to economic reasons. In 2007, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission declared remediation and decommissioning officially completed. Currently spent fuel rods as well as other types of radioactive waste is stored onsite in dry casks, at the Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation.
