Near the north end of the park’s boundary, between the lake and the interstate, is one of the great natural attractions of the Adirondacks, Ausable Chasm, a two-mile-long gorge formed by the Ausable River. Known as the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks, Ausable Chasm has been a natural feature for thousands of years. It has been privately owned and managed as an attraction since 1870. Though it doesn’t own the water, the Ausable Chasm Company owns the land on both shores, and restricts access to paying customers.
