The Barton Mines Company has a storage and processing plant next to the Hudson River and the old railway, north of the town of North River. Barton has been extracting garnet from the Adirondacks since 1878, the longest continuous mining operation in the park, with mines at two locations: Gore Mountain (now closed), and Ruby Mountain (still active). Once a major source for abrasives used in sandpaper and for polishing optics, Barton’s garnet is used mostly in waterjet and blast media cutting and shaping technologies today.
