Camp Uncas was the second Great Camp built by William West Durant, known as the father of the Adirondack Style. He built it for his own use, from 1890 to 1892, and it is located on its own private lake, a few miles from his first camp, Pine Knot, nearby on Raquette Lake. Camp Uncas was sold to J. P. Morgan in 1896, and then to a neighbor, Margaret Vanderbilt, in 1947, who owned Camp Sagamore, nearby. She left Camp Uncas to a foundation, and it was a Boy Scout camp for a while, but is now back in private hands, owned by Barbara Glaser, who with her husband Howard Kirschenbaum, have been active preservationists of several Great Camps, including Camp Sagamore and Camp Santanoni.
