Coldspring Stone, in Au Sable Forks, has been operating dimensional stone quarries in the park since the 1950s. Coldspring is a nationwide company, with around 30 quarries across North America, and headquartered in Cold Spring, Minnesota. The company makes granite and other facing stone for architectural projects and memorials. It was founded by Henry Alexander, a Scottish stonecutter who settled in Rockville, Minnesota, in 1886. He opened a granite quarry there that provided the stone columns for the Minnesota State Capitol building. The company moved to Cold Spring in 1920, and after World War II begins buying quarries around the country, including this one, once known as Lake Placid Granite. There are dozens of other quarries, aggregate pits, and sand pits throughout the park, used for construction projects in the region, and beyond.
