When the big paper mill at Palmer Falls was torn down in 2012, the former headquarters building of the International Paper Company was spared, with hopes that it might become some kind of museum, but so far it has not. International Paper, formed here in 1898, is still the largest paper company in the world, as it has been for much of its existence. With the increased use of southern forests for pulp, and the room to make bigger and bigger plants, International Paper’s US operations moved south. It is now headquartered in Memphis.
