Near Lake Placid is the family farm and grave site of the 19th century abolitionist John Brown. John Brown was hanged for leading a raid on the United States Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to arm an anti-slavery militia. He was buried here by his wife in 1859. In 1896 the farm was donated to the state of New York and developed as a memorial to John Brown’s life and legacy.
