The tallest peak in the Adirondacks, and in all of New York, is Mount Marcy, 5,344 feet high, and it often has its head in the clouds. Named after William L. Marcy, a 19th century governor of New York, the peak is also known as Tahawus, a native word that is said, by some, to mean “Cloudsplitter.” Lake Tear of the Clouds, a pond on its western slope, is generally claimed to be the source of the Hudson River, though there are higher sources for the streams that feed the river, and the named Hudson River actually begins elsewhere.
