The Rich Lumber Company finished logging in the region in 1912, and sold most of their land to the state, including some a few miles down the shore from Wanakena, to establish one of the first forest ranger schools in the USA. The New York State Ranger School has trained more than 3,000 foresters over the past century, and continues to operate as part of the State University of New York.
