The North Pole was likely the first theme park to open in the Adirondacks, in 1949. It was designed by Arto Monaco, who also worked for movie studios in Hollywood, and for Walt Disney. He was involved in the design of most of the 1950s theme parks in the Adirondacks, including the Land of Makebelieve, which he built on his own property in nearby Upper Jay.
