The Tahawus Club, one of the oldest private clubs in the Adirondacks, is based south of the closed titanium mine at Tahawus. It was relocated here after it was evicted from the old mining town known as the Upper Works, which it had occupied since 1877, after mining operations started up again in World War II. The club changed its name from the Adirondack Club in 1898, at a time when its lease from the mining company covered nearly 100,000 acres, and extended over the states highest peaks. Today it has a clubhouse with 11 bedrooms, and 18 cabins on 6,000 acres. Private clubs are still among the largest landowners in Adirondack Park, and have had a great influence on its development and management.
