One of the largest and most legendary of the Great Camps in the Adirondacks is Topridge. Owned for years by Marjorie Merriweather Post (whose other homes included Mar-a-Lago, Florida), Topridge grew to have 68 buildings, with a funicular to bring guests up to the camp from the five-bay boathouse on the lake. Post gave Topridge to the state of New York, which tried to open it to the public, unsuccessfully. It was sold and is now owned by Harlan Crow, a real estate magnate from Texas, who is on the board of the Enterprise Institute and is said to be a good friend of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
