This commercial storefront was built in 1947, on a block that is considered the historic commercial core of Mar Vista, built out between 1924 and 1960 (when “toggery” was still generally known to mean clothing). In 1950 the Venice Short Line stopped running though downtown Mar Vista, and when the property was photographed for a real estate listing in 1962, the 60 foot wide median from the railway was a chaotic space, used for parking. A few years later, Venice Boulevard was widened into the median, allowing the sidewalks to be widened too, as is visible in the contemporary image. The later photograph also shows how the building was converted into two separate businesses, each with its own door and window. The empty lot on the west side, included in the same real estate listing, has been developed.
