The headquarters for the Hartz Mountain Company, the privately held company that is responsible for much of the development in Secaucus, is inside a tower in the Harmon Meadow business and retail area. The company expanded from its roots in the pet food industry to real estate by purchasing 1,250 acres of landfilled swamp here in 1969, and developing them into Harmon Cove and Harmon Meadows. The company now has real estate and financial assets all over the NYC region. Harmon Meadow is surrounded by landlocked swamp land, and bisected by the Turnpike at its intersection with route 3. Businesses in the area are mostly big box retail and large chain business hotels around a corporate convention center.
