The Koppers Company operated a coke tar processing plant on the Hackensack from 1917 to 1979. The site has been stripped of most of its structures, and is now one of the largest redevelopable heavy industry areas in the region. Earthmoving has been going on there for years, using a barge loading zone on the east end to move clean material to the site and to move contaminated materials away from it. Much of the work is being done by the Stevenson Company, an environmental services company at work on over one hundred Superfund sites around the country. Stevenson was the principal contractor for cleaning up Love Canal at Niagara Falls NY, where the company is still based.
