Apple Valley Dry Lake once was a shrubby lakebed, but is mostly now indistinguishable as part of the subdivided grid of the town of Apple Valley, next to Victorville, California. Groundwater has been pumped substantially from the valleys along the Mojave River, and drainage altered by road beds and culverts, allowing development to encroach even onto former dry lakes, in some cases.
