China Lake is located near Ridgecrest, and is the geographic feature which gives the China Lake Navy (and Marine Corps) Weapons Center its name. The main base and airfield were built near the dry lake in World War Two, but operations have spread throughout the 1,700 square miles that are contained within the restricted perimeter.
