This dry lake is in the Goldstone Deep Space Tracking Station, which has several large and historic communication complexes associated with lunar and space probe missions, mostly operated by the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena. Goldstone is on federal land located in a wedge between Fort Irwin and China Lake Weapons Station. Officially part of Fort Irwin, the lakebed has some remnants of munitions training and a paved airstrip that is still in use.
