Hayfield is located next to Interstate 10, south of Joshua Tree Park, and in front of the Hinds Pumping Station, part of the Colorado River Aqueduct. The aqueduct approaches the lake from the east as an open canal, then is pumped up into a tunnel inside the mountains north of the lake, from which it emerges, a few miles further west, on its way to Los Angeles.
