Means is inside the Johnson Valley Off Highway Vehicle Area, the largest open area for OHV recreation in the Mojave, and possibly the entire nation. Means is the location of the King of Hammers, a major week-long off road vehicle event, held annually, and the dry lakebed is severely altered by off road activity. The Marine Corps’ Twentynine Palms base has recently expanded its perimeter westward, and had taken over some of the OHV land. The area around Means is now a joint use area, managed by the BLM and the Marine Corps, which occasionally closes the area to recreational use.
