Like nearby Means Dry Lake, Melville is in the 53,000-acre portion of the Johnson Valley OHV open area known now as a joint use area, managed by the BLM and the Marine Corps. This agreement, forged in 2015, allows the Corps to close the area to recreational use, to conduct their own off road maneuvers in privacy.
