A road off the strip at Lake George Village passes over the Northway, and up to the top of Prospect Mountain, where the vestiges of an old resort remain in a park with a commanding view of the region. In 1885 a cable railway opened, bringing people 1.5 miles up from Lake George Village to the resort at the summit. The resort closed in the 1920s, and the property was donated to the state by George Foster Peabody, who purchased it to prevent a casino from being developed there. The hotel buildings and railway were demolished, and the land turned into a park.
