This building is the home of the global headquarters of the Verizon company, the largest (along with AT&T) telephone company in the nation. It was built in 1974 as the headquarters for New York Telephone. Verizon started in 1983 as Philadelphia-based Bell Atlantic, and covered much of the northeast as a regional “baby Bell” after the breakup of AT&T. Merged with Nynex in 1997, with GTE in 2000, and MCI in 2005.
