Banana Distributors of New York

Founded in 1950 in East Harlem, but now located just outside the Hunts Point Terminal Market, Banana Distributors of New York ships a million boxes of bananas every year, or nearly two million bananas each week, to the independent supermarkets, grocery stores, and bodegas of New York City. On any given day, the company expects to have 20,000 boxes of bananas in the building, which spend five days ripening in rooms that are refrigerated to within a half degree of 62 degrees F (or, depending on supply and demand, four days at 64 degrees or seven days at 58). Banana Distributors of New York boasts twenty-two ripening rooms of varying vintage, from the original 70s-era pressurized rooms to the world’s first two-tier tarp-less rooms.
