Brothers Jess Jr. and Frank Telles formed Telles Ranch Incorporated (TRI) in 1953, farming over fifty-thousand acres of cotton, melons, tomatoes, lettuce, barley and wheat in Arizona and California. By the late 1960s, they were the world’s largest growers and shippers of cantaloupes. By the early 1990s, having also become the world’s largest honeydew operation, TRI dissolved, and reformed as Westside Produce, “an independent handler of the finest quality cantaloupe and honeydew melons in the Central San Joaquin Valley.” Today the company ships up to 6,000 acres of cantaloupes annually. At its packing plant in Firebaugh, Westside Produce operates a forced air cooler with sixteen tunnels, in which melons are covered and cooled from field temperatures above 100 degrees F to below 40 in approximately four hours.
