Sunshine Canyon is one of the largest landfills in the region. It opened in 1958, and now just about all of the trash collected by the City of Los Angeles goes there, and a third of the waste from the entire county (a county with more than 10 million people). It is located next to Newhall Pass, near Sylmar, just west of Interstate 5. Owned by Republic Services, one of the largest waste companies in the country, with 200 landfills, coast to coast.
