There is a cluster of solar plants around the Central Valley town of Alpaugh, California, built and operated for Consolidated Edison. Two adjacent photovoltaic plants at Alpaugh produce around 70 megawatts, and three more south of town produce another 50 megawatts. There are a few other solar plants in the Central Valley, including the 48-megawatt plant at Avenal, which opened in 2011 and for a year was the largest photovoltaic plant in the nation.
