Chevron’s El Segundo Refinery is one of the largest in the region, and is the second refinery built by the company (the first is in Richmond, California). It processes up to 250,000 barrels of crude per day, 80% of it arriving via tanker from Alaska or the Middle East. Ships unload to the refinery at a spread mooring, an anchorage area a half mile off the coast, connected to the refinery by a submerged pipeline. The company town of El Segundo was established in 1911.
