Within the grounds of the 1,350 square mile Nevada Test Site (where more than a thousand explosive nuclear tests were conducted) is the Area 5 Radioactive Waste Management Site, a major disposal site for radioactive waste material from DOE projects around the country. There are several disposal cells where material is placed in excavated pits and capped with a soil cover. There is also a structure covering a pad that is used for higher level transuranic waste. In other parts of the test site, radioactive material has simply been dumped into subsidence craters.
