The Osceola Sugar Mill was the first plant in the USA built by the Florida Crystals company, and is one of two sugar mills operated by them in the agricultural area south of the lake, in the largest cane sugar producing area in the country. Florida Crystals bought the mill in Louisiana, shipped it on barges (using the Okeechobee Waterway) and reassembled it here in 1960. The company was acting quickly, as it lost its Cuban operations after Cuba’s 1959 revolution.
